The Midnight Sun Rises
Wolf looks ahead to Secret Solstice
Icelandic folklore says that nature works in mysterious ways on Midsummer. Cows begin to talk, seals take human form and elves emerge from the netherworld to seduce you with food and gifts. While the organisers of Secret Solstice can’t guarantee any of the above, there is sure to be a fair amount of Midsummer magic at the festival's premier event from Friday the 20th until Sunday the 22nd of June in Reykjavik.
The first of its kind, Secret Solstice Festival will take festival goers on a musical journey through 72 hours of sunlight. Due to Iceland’s proximity to the Arctic Circle, the sun will never fully set for the whole 3 days and 3 ‘nights’, with the midnight sun lighting up the dance floor well into the night.
Already making waves in its first year, Secret Solstice has been named one of TIME magazine’s 14 festivals to check out in 2014. It’s not hard to see why, with a line-up of over 130 acts including Massive Attack, Disclosure, Carl Craig and an impressive collection of local talent.
Secret Solstice is making a name for itself for much more than just its line-up though, shaping the whole festival experience to be one that could truly not be found anywhere else on Earth. We can only hope that the Norse mythology theme of the festival will see the inclusion of the Icelandic Midsummer tradition of taking a naked roll in the fresh morning dew and making a wish.
But for those who prefer another kind of Icelandic natural wonder, the festival site in Laugardalur, Reykjavik is home to the Iceland’s largest thermal pool, a botanic garden and a Zoo. And if bathing in a pool heated by the hellfires of a volcano is not enough, Secret Solstice will also offer tours for festival goers to explore the scenic beauty of other parts of the country.
The owners and organisers, an ambitious group mostly in their twenties, have set themselves the goal of making Secret Solstice the biggest music festival in Iceland in only its first year. With such a stellar line-up and an unforgettable setting, they may just be set to achieve this.
So what is the secret behind Secret Solstice? “We can’t tell you. It’s a secret,” they say.
Definitely worth braving the talking cows to find out.
